  • Maharashtra political row: What could Sena rebel Eknath Shinde’s next move be?

Rebel Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde said that he has the support of 40 out of the 55 Sena MLAs. Uncertainty looms over the MVA govt in Maharashtra led by Uddhav Thackerary. But, what is expected to happen next? Here is everything you need to know.

As clouds of uncertainty hover above the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, all eyes are on the next move of rebel leader Eknath Shinde. He has claimed that he has been backed by 40 out of 55 Shiv Sena MLAs. All of them are lodged in the Hotel Radisson Blu hotel in Guwahati, Assam.

Shinde went into a huddle with his supporters to chalk out the strategy for the upcoming days.

What is expected today:
1. Eknath Shinde is likely to be elected as leader of the Shiv Sena rebels. They have claimed that they are the original Shiv Sena as they have more than two-thirds of MLAs in their camp.

2. Shinde might seek an appointment with Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari to hand him over the list of his supporters.

3. Shinde might also approach Deputy Assembly Speaker Narhari Jhirwal with a request to recognise his group as the original Shiv Sena in the Assembly.

4. Uddhav Thackeray has called a meeting of MLAs supporting him. He might announce a decision on whether he would step down or face a no-confidence motion in the Assembly.

5. Uddhav Thackeray will virtually address secretaries, thanking them for cooperation.

6. As Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari is recuperating from the Covid infection, Shinde might write to him instead of a personal meeting.

7. There is a possibility of handing over Koshyari's charge to his Goa counterpart, P Shridharan, until he is back in shape.

8. All Shiv Sena rebel MLAs are likely to be shifted to Panaji if Shridharan gets an additional charge of Maharashtra.

9. Two more Shiv Sena MLAs are likely to reach Surat and take a flight to Guwahati.

10. BJP leaders are keeping a close watch on the developments. Once Shinde is elected, the BJP may approach the Governor, staking a claim to form a government with the backing of Shinde's group.

Likely scenarios:
1. Uddhav Thackeray might step down, as he does not have the majority on his side.

2. A legal battle might take place to decide whether Eknath Shinde’s faction is the original party.

3. The BJP might join hands with Shinde's faction and stake claim to form the government.

4. The new government might take shape by Sunday, June 26.
