Congress announce candidates for Amethi and Raebareli seats soon as the deadline inches closer
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday said that party chief Mallikarjun Kharge will finalise the candidates for the highly anticipated, Rae Bareli and Amethi Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh and the announcement will be made soon.
The anticipation over whether Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will contest from the Amethi and Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seats persists as the last day to file nomination for the phase 3 is on May 3. These constituencies hold significant historical importance as traditional strongholds of the Gandhi-Nehru family, having been represented by its members for generations.
Reports suggest that Rahul Gandhi is leaning towards contesting from Rae Bareli, although a final decision is pending from the Congress leadership. Priyanka Gandhi also expresses interest in the Rae Bareli seat, but Rahul Gandhi seems hesitant due to concerns regarding criticism of dynasty politics, particularly by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Sources reveal Rahul's reluctance to have all three Gandhi family members simultaneously serving in parliament. Despite a meeting held to discuss candidature, no conclusive decision was reached.
K L Sharma, a close aide of the Gandhis, acknowledges public expectations for the family to contest from Amethi and Rae Bareli, assuring that a decision will be made "very soon" before the May 3 deadline for nominations.
Amid the suspense, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh reassures that "nobody is scared" and promises a decision within the next 24-30 hours. He notes that the party's Central Election Committee has delegated authority to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge to finalize candidates for the two crucial constituencies.
