The Delhi High Court Friday put a stay on the trial court order which granted bail to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the excise policy case. Kejriwal will continue to remain in judicial custody, with the HC expected to pronounce the final verdict on June 25. A day earlier, the trial court had granted the AAP supremo bail on Thursday (June 20), with Special Judge Niyay Bindu declining ED’s plea to keep the bail order in abeyance for 48 hours. Following this, the ED had approached the Delhi HC seeking a stay on the order.

Three months ago, Kejriwal was arrested by the ED in a money laundering case related to the Delhi excise policy scam being probed separately by the CBI too. Kejriwal has been in custody in Tihar Jail. Arrested on March 21, he had stepped out last month on interim bail to campaign in the Lok Sabha elections and surrendered on June 2.

The ED had earlier alleged that Kejriwal was “directly involved in the formulation” of the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy, which was drafted “considering the favours to be granted to the ‘South Group’ which the ED claimed “secured uninhibited access, undue favours, attained stakes in established wholesale businesses, and multiple retail zones, and paid Rs 100 crore to AAP leaders in return.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi has commenced arguments in the hearing. The ED had approached the Delhi HC against the trial court order passed on Thursday (June 20) granting bail to Kejriwal in the excise policy case.

With the Delhi High Court hearing ED’s plea seeking cancellation of bail granted to Arvind Kejriwal, counsel S V Raju said that the Supreme Court had not given a clean chit to the Delhi CM. “SC while granting interim bail to him did not give him clean chit. But this has been treated as basis for impugned order,” Raju said.
